dBadge for noise at work measurements

The dBadge system is the perfect solution for the measurement of a worker's exposure to noise.  The badge is small and light, with no cables to catch.  There is also a huge cost saving where multiple dosemeters are required.

The dBadge has a rechargeable battery giving up to 28 hours operation, sufficient to perform many consecutive shift measurements without charging or downloading. It is charged using the convenient multi-badge charger in less than 90 minutes. Data is downloaded to a computer using the infra-red link provided.

Noise Dosemeter Kits dbadge noise dosemeter kits Combination Kits noise combination kit

The dBadge is usually supplied as part of a Noise Dosemeter Kit, which includes all the accessories and software needed.

If you need a hand-held sound level meter as well as some noise dosemeters then a Combination Kit will be ideal.

Why Use a Dosimeter?

When it comes to measuring noise in the workplace, there are two options: a hand-held sound level meter or a noise dosemeter. The dosemeter (like the dBadge) is the best option when workers are moving between locations, between different pieces of machinery, or are working in an area that makes it difficult or dangerous to follow them round with a sound level meter. In these cases, rather than making lots of spot measurements with a sound level meter and then calculating the worker's noise exposure (LEP,d), a dosemeter monitors for the full working shift and provides you with these parameters.

If you need both a sound level meter and noise dosimeters then please have a look at our Combination Kits.

Regulations and Standards

The dBadge can be used to measure a worker's exposure to noise in most parts of the world. For use in Europe it is run in the ISO setting. Please visit the Specifications page for more information.

dBadge Standard

The Standard dBadge measures all noise at work parameters along with a Time History Profile, storing the average sound level every minute to provide a graph of level over time.

Kit order codes: CEL350Kx
Where x is the number of dosemeters

dBadge Plus

The dBadge Plus has all the features of the Standard version, but adds simultaneous measurement of "A" and "C" weighted Leq for checking the suitability of hearing protectors.

Kit order codes: CEL352Kx
Where x is the number of dosemeters

Noise Measurement Parameters

All dBadge versions measure all the parameters needed by the noise at work regulations.

  • LAeq average sound level
  • LEP,d or LEX,8hr daily noise exposure
  • LCPeak for loud banging noise

The dBadge stores the Leq and Peak every minute. The Plus version also stores the LAeq and LCeq so that the LCeq-LAeq figure can be used for selecting hearing protectors.

Display and Controls

dbadge display

The display shows the following information:

  • Measurement status and data
  • Ultra-bright LED high noise level alarm
  • "Fuel gauge" for memory available and battery level
  • 1 minute values of average and peak sound levels

The dBadge has just two keys to control its simple operation.

The keys and the display can be locked to prevent tampering during measurement.

Charging the dBadge

dBadge dosemeters slot onto the charger, which can charge up to three units at the same time.

  • Fully charged in 90 minutes from flat
  • Multiple chargers can be linked together
  • Visual display of charge progress on "fuel gauge"

When on charge, the dBadge display shows the operating capacity of the battery in hours. It only takes 90 minutes for a full charge and a 30 minute charge us sufficient to give an operating time of 8 hours.

Kits with 1, 2, 3 and 5 dBadge Dosemeters include one 3-way charger. Kits with 10 dBadges include two 3-way chargers.

dBadge Versions

All versions of the dBadge Noise Dosemeter - Standard and Plus along with the Intrinsically Safe version - operate in the same way. The only difference is in the measurements that are downloaded.

1. Charge the dBadge

charge the dbadgeThe dBadge has rechargeable batteries that will operate for up to 28 hours between charges. From flat, the dBadge takes just 90 minutes to charge.

To charge the dBadge simply slot it onto the the charging block.

calibrating the dbadge2. Calibrate

To calibrate the dBadge, remove the windshield and fit the dosemeter's microphone into the Calibrator cavity.

When the Calibrator is switched on the dBadge will automatically switch into Calibration Mode.

dbadge mounts3. Mount the dBadge on the Worker

The dBadge is supplied with two mounts as standard:

Crocodile Clip - The easiest and quickest to use. Particularly suited to thinner material.

Pin Mount - A more secure mount and suited to the thicker material used in heavy duty overalls.

The dBadge should be mounted on the worker before the measurement process is started to avoid false noise events.

start noise measurement4. Start the Measurement

The dBadge has just two buttons, one on either side.

To start the measurement, press and hold both buttons for three seconds.

Locking the Keys

To stop anybody from accidentally stopping the measurement or even purposefully tampering, the keys can be locked. This also removes the sound level from the display as this can tempt people to shout or whistle at the microphone to see the effect.

5. Stop the Measurement

The dBadge should be left to measure for the full working shift so that you get the full noise exposure. You can measure for a shorted period and then calculate the exposure, but far better to measure it instead.

Stopping the dBadge is similar to starting it. Simply press the two buttons and hold for three seconds. Of course you have to unlock the keypad first if you chose to lock it.

6. Viewing the Results

The main noise parameters (LAeq, LEPd, LCPeak, etc.) can now be viewed on the dBadge's display. It simply cycles through the values on the display. All you need to record is the LAeq, LEP,d, Duration and Peak. If you want more than this then it is better to download to the Insight software.

7. Downloading

infra-red adapterThe dBadge connects to a computer using the Infra-Red adapter that is included. This cable connects into the computer's USB port. When the dBadge is placed near the cable it is detected and the measurements are automatically downloaded to the Insight software.

The downloaded measurements can be allocated to a person, place or process for reporting purposes.

Insight Software for the dBadge

The Insight Software data management software for the dBadge noise dosemeter runs in Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1). It deals with downloading the noise measurements, managing the data and presenting reports.

insight noise software
  • Quickly create noise reports
  • Tabular and graphic analysis
  • Share results with others
  • Supports multiple instruments
  • Manage meter inventory and calibration
  • Included in dBadge Noise Kits

You only need one copy of the program with the dBadge plug-in. With this, you can manage as many dBadge noise dosemeters as you need, with no additional cost.

Downloading

dosimeter download to computer

To download the noise measurements, connect the Infra-Red download cable to the computer's USB port and run the Insight software.

Ensure that the dBadge is switched on and place it next to the IR cable as shown. The Insight software will recognize the dBadge and download its measurements automatically.

Organizing the Results

assigning noise measurements to people and places

The downloaded measurements are displayed in a tree view in the Downloaded folder.

At this stage the measurements are not assigned to any person, place, etc. You can assign a measurement to any branch of the tree by simply dragging it from the results list.

Viewing the Noise Measurements

Measurements can be viewed in a table (cumulative values like Leq, LEP,d, etc.) or in a graph.

Colour Coding Indicates Noise Levels

Generating Reports

Reports can be created using either single or multiple measurements, which are selected from the tree view in the Insight software. You simply select the entity for which you want to generate a report - this can be a person, place or process and then select the option to Generate report...

The Report Wizard then leads you through the process, allowing you to select the sorting (site, location, process or person), making it very convenient to generate reports for all people, all processes, etc. You can then select a date range and even include/exclude selected measurements, and which fields you want included - date, time, duration, battery state, notes, and so on.

A personal header and footer can be added. All changes to the layout and content is saved so that you don't have to go through the same selections again.

Once generated, the report can be viewed on screen, printed or exported to other formats such as Excel (XLS) or PDF (ideal for emailing).

Intrinsically Safe Noise Dosemeter

The Intrinsically Safe versions of the dBadge have the following approvals for use in hazardous environments and potentially explosive atmospheres:

  • ATEX approval
    • EEx ia I M1
    • EEx ia IIC 1 G
  • North American and Canadian FM/CSA approval
    • Class 1, Division 1, Groups A, B, C, D
    • Temperature Classification T2.

With regard to functionality, acoustic performance and measurement parameters, the I.S. version of dBadge is identical to the non-approved type. The I.S. dBadge is available in "Standard" and "Plus" versions.

The approvals confirm the I.S. dBadge Noise Dosemeter as "intrinsically safe" and suitable for use in hazardous areas such as mines, printing works, petrochemical plants and other areas with potentially explosive atmospheres.

The order codes for the Intrinsically Safe version of the dBadge contain the letters "IS", such as CEL350IS and CEL352IS.

The dBadge Kits (dosemeters, calibrator, charger, case, etc.) have order codes such as CEL350ISK5 for a kit with 5 dosemeters.

Limitations of the Intrinsic Safety Approval

Only the dBadge unit (shown in picture above) and its direct attachments (mounting devices) are approved for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. None of the additional items such Charger or Calibrator are approved, so all tasks such as charging and calibrating the dBadge should be done outside the hazardous area.

dBadge Noise Dose Measurement Kits

The dBadges, Calibrator and accessories can be bought individually, but it is more cost effective to buy them as part of a Noise Measurement Kit, which includes everything you need to carry out a complete noise at work.

You can use the dBadge without the Insight Software, reading the values from the display, but this does not take full advantage of the dosemeter's features. For more detailed analysis, graphs and long term storage we include the Insight Software in the Noise Kits.

If you need a hand-held sound level meter as well as the noise dosemeters then we can offer the dBadge as part of a Combination Kit. These kits include a hand-held noise meter that can be used for making spot checks as well as carrying out a more detailed noise at work assessment manually.
